TAPS Academy provides a school-based curriculum that brings law enforcement, community services, and at-risk youth together through an 11-week program. During this timeframe, specific topics associated with Children and Youth Safety (COPS-CPD-2011-3) are covered. Subjects include violence, physical and sexual abuse, stalking, domestic trafficking, sexual exploitation, and bullying. The curriculum also covers law enforcement related subject areas that are relevant to youth.
Topic experts guide the teenagers and police officers through 90-minute group sessions twice per week. A variety of methods are used such as lectures, group discussions, small group break-out sessions and skit presentations.
TAPS Academy is designed to help youth change behavior, learn responsible decision making, participate in crime prevention projects, and reduce the social distance between themselves and law enforcement.
