TAPS Success Spotlight
Meet Stephanie, a graduate of the Fall 2012 TAPS Academy in Houston, Texas. Prior to beginning TAPS, Stephanie struggled with school attendance, controlling her anger and lashing out. She felt the police were untrustworthy, “out to get her”, and mistreated people in her community. Enrolling in the class to gain “easy credit”, TAPS became transformational for Stephanie! The face-to-face interactions with police officers gave her a new perspective on both her role as a student and citizen, and their role as authority figures and peacekeepers. To this day, Stephanie remains in touch with some of the officers she met in TAPS and she has since graduated high school and plans to start undergraduate classes at University of Houston Downtown. She wants to major in Criminal Justice and, afterwards, attend law school.
Without the kindness of our donors, bringing together police with youth like Stephanie in an engaging and neutral setting to talk and learn from each other would not be possible.
